We are excited to announce the 2022 Social Justice + Media Symposium! This year's theme is #place. Speakers and workshops will explore the concept of place as a mechanism for how we understand the world around us, and the ways in which media help to document, share, and reflect places around us.
Keynoting this year’s symposium is Miccosukee Grandmother Betty Osceola, who organized the #defendthesacred prayer walk to save big cypress and has generously agreed to share her thoughts on place, struggle, and community with us.
Director Cathleen Dean will also share her voice and work at the symposium with a screening of Wade in the Water, followed by a Q&A about the complex relationship between Black swimmers and Florida waters “—one of segregation and violence, but also one of protest and resistance.”
