Paul Mihailidis

Paul Mihailidis is a Professor in the School of Communication at Emerson College in Boston, MA, where he teaches media literacy, civic media, and community activism. He is founding program director of the MA in Media Design and a Principle Investigator and Faculty Director of the Engagement Lab at Emerson College. Mihailidis also directs the Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change (http://www.salzburgglobal.org/Go/MediaAcademy2016). His research focuses on the nexus of media, education, and civic voices. His newest books, Civic Agency (Routledge 2018), Civic Media: Technology, Design, Practice (2016, MIT Press, with Eric Gordon) and Media Literacy and the Emerging Citizen (Peter Lang, 2014), outlines effective practices for participatory citizenship and engagement in digital culture. Under his direction, the Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change, a global media literacy incubator program, annually gathers 75 students and a dozen faculty to build networks for media innovation, civic voices and global change. Mihailidis has authored numerous books and papers exploring civic media, and traveled around the world speaking about media and engagement in digital culture. He co-edits the Journal of Media Literacy Education, and sits on the advisory board for iCivics. He earned his PhD from the Phillip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, College Park.
